ODOT Automation Releases New Style IoT Gateway Device – Serial Gateway with MQTT Converter Function – Aiding Smart Factories’ Challenges on Costs and Communication

With the global supply chain recovering, smart factories and the automation industries are ramping up to full speed, experiencing challenges that require agile solutions. Some of the challenges include:

  1. Interoperability and system communication
  2. Poor Security
  3. Complex supply chain
  4. High cost
  5. Safety hazards
  6. Lack of computing power

By concept, a smart factory requires 3 smooth operating aspects. Machine network, communication mechanism, and computing power.

Within a smart factory, the operational technology consists of MES (manufacturing execution systems), SCADA, PLCs, meters, valves, sensors, motors, etc.

Common protocols include PROFINET, PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus, while the IT systems include an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system (usually SNMP, HTTP, SOAP, XML protocols.)

To establish stable, cost-effective data collection and transmission channels for applications, a flexible protocol module, RTU, and I/O module are key.

To keep interoperability between OT, IT, and IIoT protocols easies and faster, applications such as gateway servers, devices, and systems are required to collect all data in high quality across both OT and IT platforms.

With that in mind, ODOT Automation has recently launched a new style of IoT Gateway Device – a Serial Gateway with a MQTT function

This protocol converter can easily connect serial port devices to Ethernet and network upgrades of serial port devices implementation. Protocol converter supports the function of “data transmission”, which can be set as a client or a server.

This function can easily deploy data communication between PLC, server, and other Ethernet devices and the underlying serial port devices. Modules that support this feature are ODOT-S1E1 and ODOT-S2E1.

S1E1 supports TCP server, TCP client, and UDP pure passthrough mode. The passthrough mode supports passthrough with and without protocol. The protocol converter supports browser configuration and does not store direct forward data.

Using an MQTT converter such as this will allow you to publish the data received from serial into a MQTT server with fast and easy access to IoT servers. Compatible with Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, IBM Cloud, Google Cloud… etc and customized Servers) that support MQTT protocol.)

To overcome security challenges, MQTT communication can be encrypted using TLS / SSL protocols.

In addition, ODOT has also launched a new Modbus-RTU to Profinet converter.

ODOT-PNM02 V2.0/V2.1 gateway is a Modbus-RTU/ASCII or non-standard protocol to ProfiNet protocol converter. Any device with an RS485/RS232/RS422 interface supporting Modbus-RTU/ASCII or non-standard protocol can use this product to realise interconnection with industrial bus ProfiNet.

Such as PLC, DCS, remote IO, VFD, scanner, motor start protection device, intelligent high and low voltage electrical appliances, electricity measuring devices, intelligent field measuring equipment and instruments, etc.

ODOT-PNM02 V2.0 supports Maximum slots of 50 and 60 slaves (200 read and write commands).

Odot Automation – Remote I/O, RTU Modules Solution includes:

Flexible protocol module, RTU, and I/O module plug and play:

1. Designed with a max of 64 modules, each I/O module is built with 16 channels and each have LED indicator.

2. Supports an overall of 1024 I/O points and hot plug;

3. The I/O module back plate cable can be extended to 20 meters to be used in multiple panels;

4. WTP is from -40~85℃ with a warranty of 3 years;

5. High speed 12M back plate bus, with 64 digital quantity modules of a refreshing period at 2ms and analog quantity is 3.4ms;

6. Supports Modbus-RTU, Modbus-TCP, Profinet, Profibus – DP (DPV0), EtherCAT, EtherCAT and others up to 12 kinds of the mainstream protocol.
