There are four factors manufacturing companies should consider before applying remote I/O modules in their manufacturing plant/factory.
The question is simple. Is your master electronics (DCS, PLC, and PCs) connected to a remote or distributed I/O. Basically distributed I/O has computing capacity, which acts like a ‘brain’, while remote I/O is a single controller that doesn’t have any computing function.
If we rewind a few decades back, we’ll see that the Direct Digital Control or DDC system is the predecessor of DCS and PLC. Stepping forward, local I/O in PLC is the most basic system that we use. Contained within one cabinet body, and in-built I/O’s in the CPU assembly.
