Is Your Master Brainless? DCS, PLC, PCs – Remote I/O or Distributed I/O

The question is simple. Is your master electronics (DCS, PLC, and PCs) connected to a remote or distributed I/O. Basically distributed I/O has computing capacity, which acts like a ‘brain’, while remote I/O is a single controller that doesn’t have any computing function. However…

When consulting or assessing a process or factory automation, we like to assess the extent of input and output signals to and from the master electronics because the truth is that there are actually tons of good advantages from placing a remote I/O module in the master devices, or as we call it, the main control “cabinet.”

With PLC remote access, the commissioning process and management of the entire machine process and operation is simplified and monitored real time, and most importantly allowing industrial equipment to build and carry out most maintenance and operation remotely, from a distance, which 99% of the time saves companies a lot of time and money.

To cover the basics, placing a remote I/O in the system will benefit the process through security, standardisation, and less wiring perspectives.

Instead of having only specific inputs or outputs, you can now be less constrained from the typically 8 inputs capacity. We recommend ODOT Automation with flexible protocol module, RTU, and I/O module plug and play solution:

1. Designed with a max of 64 modules, each I/O module is built with 16 channels and each have

    LED indicator.

2. Supports an overall of 1024 I/O points and hot plug;

3. The I/O module back plate cable can be extended to 20 meters to be used in multiple panels;

4. WTP is from -40~85℃ with a warranty of 3 years;

5. High speed 12M back plate bus, with 64 digital quantity modules of a refreshing period at

    2ms and analog quantity is 3.4ms;

6. Supports Modbus-RTU, Modbus-TCP, Profinet, Profibus – DP (DPV0), EtherCAT, EtherCAT

    and others up to 12 kinds of the main stream protocol.

ODOT has successfully provided professional field data collection solutions for automotive and new energy, wind power, textile enterprises, automobile accessory enterprises, cereal & oil processing enterprises, food and beverage producing plants, water treatment, power management, hydro power stations, etc.

Case Study

ODOT C Series I/O System increases Lithium Cell Thermoforming Efficiency

Background

The current structure of world energy consumption is still dominated by petroleum, coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels, accounting for about 85%. Under the background of low carbon, new energy has become the main direction of global development.

With the sharp increase in the production and sales of new energy vehicles, the demand for lithium batteries continues to rise. At the same time, the rapid development of industries such as mobile phones, electric vehicles, and electric tools has also stimulated the continuous growth of demand for lithium batteries.

The products of ODOT Automation are widely used in the production process of various power lithium batteries and consumer lithium batteries, and become an important component supplier in the lithium battery industry chain.

Case

In the process of lithium production, a very important step is to pack the cell into the shell after thermoforming. The basic process is to place the stacked cell between the upper and lower form board, and the cell forming will be finished by the form board with the combined action caused by pressurised cylinder pressure and form board temperature. It could make the cell thickness to achieve the same and reduce the elasticity, so as to improve the qualified rate of the cell package.

End User Application:

In order to optimise the cell thermoforming, ODOT provided C-series remote IO system to carry out the key tasks of collecting process data and outputting control signals for a large – scale consumer – grade lithium electricity manufacturer.

Solution:

Case 1

The controller is using Siemens S7-1200 PLC to communicate with the IO modules via ODOT CN-8032-L Profinet adapter, which carries analog I/O module CT-3713/CT-4234. It could control the real-time data transmission between PLC controller with the field equipment such as thermocouple and pressure sensor.

ModulesSpecification
CN-8032-LProfinet network adapter,input/output max 1440Byte,2×RJ45
CT-3713Analog input RTD-PT100,3CH,accuracy≤0.5℃
CT-4234Analog output 0-20mA/4-20mA,4CH,16 Bit

Case 2

The ODOT C series remote IO can realise the fast and stable communication from the production line equipment to the controller. A leading power lithium battery enterprise uses BECKHOFF controller in its lithium battery stacking production line. The ODOT CN-8033 EtherCAT adapter, which carries multiple sets of CT-121F/CT-222F digital modules and CT-3168/CT-3238 analog modules. It could realise data acquisition and control of sensors and drivers of the entire lithium battery laminate line. The data delay is at 0-5ms and it fully meets the field application requirements. The ODOT solution has been widely adopted in multiple production lines.

ModulesSpecification
CN-8032-LProfinet network adapter,input/output max 1440Byte,2×RJ45
CT-3713Analog input RTD-PT100,3CH,accuracy≤0.5℃
CT-4234Analog output 0-20mA/4-20mA,4CH,16 Bit

Advantages:

ODOT C series IOs provide complete solutions with input and output modules available, so as to greatly shorten the customer delivery time and reduce the overall cost. It helped the company in thermoforming to achieve cost reduction and high efficiency.
